A Non- Profit Thoroughbred Rehabilitation and Re-Training Organization

AmaDon Hills Thoroughbred Foundation (“AHTF”) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the Thoroughbred. Its mission is to rehabilitate and re-train race horses and find them new careers and homes. AHTF was founded by long-time horsewoman Mary Muellner.

As a horsewoman and owner of a retired race horse, Mary realized the need to give these wonderful horses a new lease on life once their racing careers ended. In fact, it was her horse, Amadeus, that inspired her. Amadeus was a race horse who found a new life and a new career when his racing days ended as a Grand Prix Dressage horse. He was lucky to have found a home for life and Mary is lucky to have him. There are so many good horses that need that same opportunity. As a result, AHTF was formed to address this need.

AHTF’s primary focus will be the re-education of these former racehorses into the sporthorse disciplines of dressage, show jumping and three-day eventing. However, other areas of the industry, such as polo, riding schools, police mounted units and general pleasure use will also be avenues of placement for these exceptional horses. AHTF will use classical training methods to create horses that are not only superb athletes, but a joy to handle as well.

The question has been asked, why undertake this endeavor, especially with the dominance of other breeds? The explanation is simple and twofold. First, the equestrian community outside of racing needs to be educated about the potential of the Thoroughbred. Second, the racing community needs an outlet where these horses can be retrained to find these new homes. Thoroughbreds produce excellent show jumpers, event horses, dressage horses and hunters. Thoroughbreds are elite equine athletes and their physical abilities and mental fortitude make them superior candidates for the show ring. AHTF believes that, with proper training of the horse and education of the rider, the Thoroughbred can mount a strong resurgence in these disciplines.
